The Biggest Whales of The World

There are 5  species   considered as the biggest whales  of the world and  they can live in any ocean. Following we  list these species in conjunction with their main characteristics;

Orca or killer whale.

It is a species of cetacean which belongs  to the family delphinidae.  These specimens  are scattered  throughout all the oceans of the world.  They  are very agile swimmers , in spite of having a  robust contexture   Their skin is mainly black,  with their belly and eyes of white color. The Orcas have a dorsal fin that can measure up to 1.8 meters long.

Females Orcas  are usually smaller than males, whose length can reach up to  9 meters. They tend to inhabit   in temperate waters; although they are considered as a migratory species.

They are considered as the  most feared predators  of the marine world,  a denomination   that  they gained,  for being ruthless killers when it comes to hunt their prey.

Whale Shark.

Despite its name, this species is considered one of the largest whales in the world.  The whale shark has a totally white belly, and a gray back , which is replete of  multiple moles and white lines,  that resemble a chess board.

This species belongs  to  Rhincodontidae  family , and they live mainly in  shallow tropical waters. Whales Shark  sometimes  migrate for reproducing purposes , for it´s not very common.

The Humpback Whale.

This species  is also positioned among the  biggest whales of the world. In their adult stage,  they can reach up to 16 meters in length with an approximate weight of 36000 kg. Their body is different than that of others species, presenting long pectoral fins and their head is shaped as a knot.

 The humpback whales are  the most acrobatic whales, since they often jump on the surface to hit the water. They are also called singing whales, since the male emits a unique sound for about 20 minutes, very similar to the sound of the birds. This peculiar skill is carried out  during mating stages.

They are distributed throughout the oceans and seas of the world.

Sperm Whales   

This mammal has the peculiar characteristic, of being the animal with the biggest head in the world. They can grow up to 20 meters,  and their head can reach a third of their total length. The sperm-whales feed on squids  and fish, and they have the ability to submerge to big depths in order to hunt  their preys.

They are the biggest specimen  among  the toothed whales. Males sperm whales are usually bigger than females, reaching up to 18 meters in lenght and 48 tons in weight, while  whale females reach 11 meters at most.

Blue Whale.

The blue whale is the biggest species in the world, and it is also considered the biggest animal that has lived on earth.  It can measure about 30 meters in length and weigh up to 180 tons.

They are classified as a species at risk of extinction, since they quiet persecuted for being hunted.
